MCMS science students released helium balloons on May 13, 2005 during a study of wind direction at the surface and the upper atmosphere.  Students determined that the wind direction at the surface was toward the tennis courts towards Ms. Elmore's farm or to the north west.  Each student released a tagged helium balloon and released it between 9:30 and 10:30 am and 1:30 and 2:30 pm on the 13th.  Variables of interest included the wind direction at the surface and in the upper troposphere and the distance the balloon traveled. To report a balloon finding, Click Here or call the school at (828) 241-2711. The Way the Wind Blows project was sponsored by donations made through DonorsChoose.com.

Click on the balloons to see the tag #, location and date that the balloon was found or reported.  Local Area Map: Eastern Catawba County
