You can easily find out what you missed when you were absent.
What to DO:
Check the board for assignments.
It's updated EVERY day.
Do Check the class Science Notebook. It's on Mrs. Lovdahl's podium.
Do Get a copy of worksheets and notes from the Student Supply Shelf near
the windows.
Don't wait until class starts to ask for what you missed.
Don't do makeup work during class.
Have you ever felt like you weren't being listened to? Like no one
really understands you? If so, then this procedure is for you. To
"Actively Listen" means you listen with your eyes, hands, voice and body as well
as your ears! Make sure that when you are talking the other people are
Actively Listening and when you're supposed to be listening that you are doing
Active Listening! This is the procedure.
Do Look at the person talking to you. Really focus on hearing
what the other person is saying.
Do Make notes about what the person is saying.
Do Put down other things like books, papers, and equipment when you are
actively listening to another person.
Do Repeat what the person said and ask them if you have heard them
correctly.
Agenda Procedure
Students are expected to use their agendas for the entire
year. The agenda helps you learn time management skills, remember
assignments and appointments such as practices, tryouts, doctor and dentist
visits, birthdays, etc. Use your agenda for every class and
every appointment in school and at home to get organized and manage your time. Parents can
also communicate with teachers via the agenda. More info for parents can
be found Here!
What to DO:
Do Write the class work and homework assignments in your agenda .
Do Write neatly.
Do Write everything.
Do Write future due dates in the correct place in your agenda.
Do leave your agenda open on your desk to be stamped. Stamps will
be given only for complete and legible entries in the agenda.
Do Stay quiet while working on your agenda.
Don't "forget" your agenda. It is required for the entire year.
If you need a new one, see Mrs. Ford in the office.
Jacobs Fork has the best cafeteria staff and a beautiful cafe. It's
hard to
believe 500 students eat here every day! To keep it looking great and give you the freedom to socialize with your classmates, it's important to take
care of the space.
What to DO:
Do Use the correct lines.
Do Walk.
Do Go through the line one time only.
Do Sit 6 to a table or 4 to a booth.
Do Stay at your table and with your class.
Do Be nice to the cafeteria ladies. Smile. Say Thank you.
Do Clean up your table, including the floor around you.
With 32+ students, science class can become a crowded place especially during
lab activities. There is no room under
the chairs for extra books, large purses, and zipper notebooks. It is important to minimize
the amount of clutter on your work table and the floor. This procedure
helps with that goal.
Do Bring the following supplies to every science class unless
instructed otherwise.
pencils and color
glue sticks
colored pencils
highlighters
Do Bring only science supplies to science class.
Do Leave the rest of your class books, notebooks and "stuff" in
your locker.
Don't bring toys, purses, book bags or drum sticks to science class.
Band instruments can be stored in the back of the room if science is your last
class before you go to Rotation Classes. If you have an emergency and need
items from your purse, you will always be allowed to go to your locker to get
them.
Do Enter the Computer lab quietly.
Do Sit at your assigned computer.
Do Log in as soon as you sit down.
Do Open Internet Explorer and go to
www.ScienceToyBox.com and click on Mrs. Lovdahl.
End of Class Procedure
Packing up early prevents people from hearing instructions. Before class ends we need to make sure all equipment, materials and supplies
are safely put away. We need to keep our classroom clean and safe and you
need to make sure your work is turned in or properly filed in your Science
Notebook.
Do Wait for my instruction that class is dismissed.
Do Begin to clean up and put away your materials, notebooks and supplies
only AFTER you have been given instructions to do so.
Do Put ALL supplies, materials, and equipment back in the appropriate
place.
Do Clean up all trash on the table, floor and lab benches. Wipe
down the table and lab bench if needed.
Do Return to your seat until you are dismissed.
Do Push your chair under the table after you are dismissed. If it
is the last class of the day, put your chair and any nearby chairs on the table so the floor may be
swept. Don't get ready to leave early.
Don't wander around the room picking and socializing. You will
delay clean up, cause a problem and prevent the class from being dismissed on
time.
Have you ever heard the song lyric "Walk right in. Sit right down."?
Maybe not.... Well, that's my motto for science class. Come in.
Sit down and get to work. If you need to sharpen your pencil or get
supplies from the supply shelf, you may and then get to your seat and get busy
writing in your agenda and finishing the warm up assignment.
Do Come to class prepared.
Do Get supplies and sharpen your pencils as soon as you get to class.
Do Sit down and write in your agenda .
Do Get ready for class and write in your agenda in 3 minutes.
Do Begin the warm up assignment right away.
Don't wander around the room socializing, talking or picking.
Don't come to class unprepared.
Don't wait from me to tell you to get started. Be self-motiviated!
Finishing Early Procedure
Everyone works at a different speed. It is respectful to remain quiet
until everyone has had time to finish and do a good job. It is important
to use your time wisely when you have a few extra moments on your hands. If you finish early:
Do reflect on your science notes. For reflection ideas,
CLICK
HERE.
Do study your notes.
Do study your vocabulary.
Do read read your AR book. Don't waste the time socializing
with people around you. It's distracting!
Group work includes labs, science projects and activities. Do Your
fair share of the work.
Do Collaborate with your group. That means sharing, learning,
participating and helping EVERYONE in the group.
Do Speak in a "media center" voice to your group partners.
Do Practice Active Listening.
Do Ask your group your question before your raise your hand to ask me.
I will not answer questions if your group has not attempted to answer it first.
Do Turn your chair to face the teacher during teacher instruction.
Don't waste the time socializing with people around you.
Don't disrupt other groups by speaking loudly. Use a quiet "media center"
voice.
Don't leave your seat without permission.
Handing in Work Procedure: When the
tables are in rows
Do Pass your paper to the person at the end of the row.
If you are the last one in the row, you are the checker!
Checkers Count the papers and make sure you have one from everyone in
your row.
Checkers Turn the papers right side up.
Checkers Make sure the heading is complete on every paper. Pass
incomplete papers back down the row to the owner.
Checkers Pass the papers up to the front of the room. Don't pass in papers that are missing a complete heading.
Don't talk while passing in papers.
Do Pass your paper to the person seated at position A. If you are in position A, you are the checker!
Checkers Count the papers and make sure you have one from everyone in
your group.
Checkers Turn the papers right side up.
Checkers Make sure the heading is complete on every paper. Pass
incomplete papers back to the owner.
Checkers Stack the papers on the corner of the table for Ms. Lovdahl to
pick up. Don't pass in papers that are missing a complete heading.
Don't talk while passing in papers.
Heading Procedure
Do Write a complete heading in the upper right corner of every paper.
Do Write your first and last name, date and your science
class period.
Wednesday is KARE day in RTT. Be prepared to read when you walk in the
door at 8:00am! Do Have a book checked out from the media center
and with you first thing in the morning on Wednesdays.
Do Start reading as soon as you enter RTT.
Do Request permission to take an AR test if you've finished your book.
Do Write in the AR log and bring it to me to sign after you take the
test.
Do Read the science textbook if you've forgotten your AR book. Don't
Ask to go to the media center to check out a book. KARE day is for
reading, not walking up and down the hall to the media center.
Don't do homework, draw or do other non-reading activities.
Labs and activities are usually conducted in groups of 2 or 4 students.
Everyone in the group is responsible for conducting the lab or activity neatly.
One person in the group will be the cleanup person. The cleanup
person is responsible for removing the trash from the table and floor and
returning the materials to the storage area(s). Do Conduct the lab or
activity neatly.
Do Pick up paper and other things as soon as they fall on the floor.
Do Stay in your seat until it's time to clean up.
If you are the cleanup person,
Do Start cleaning up when the teacher announces clean up time.
Do Clean up quickly and return to your seat. Don't
Get up unless you are the clean up person.
Panda Team policy is that late work is not accepted unless it is completed
during After School Detention.
Locker Break in Science Class Procedure
Science students cannot bring
other class materials and books to science class simply because there isn't
enough room to stack everything and still have room to work. In other
classes, extra books, notebooks and purses can be stored on the rack under your
chair. Science class does not have racks under the chairs. In
addition, many science classes involve labs and activities that require you to
move around the room. Books strewn on the floor cause a hazard. For
this reason, science students must leave all unnecessary items in their
lockers. Do go to your locker immediately before science class and get
your science notebook, agenda, and pencil pouch
Do store All other items in your locker. Don't bring purses or
book bags or other non-science class materials to science class.
Don't bring extra big binder/trapper keeper/zipper binders to science
class.
Lunch is short. We have 25 minutes. Here's how
to maximize our time. 1. I will say "Students who need to go to lockers,
please line up."
2. I will say "A" day - girls line up or "B" day - boys line up.
3. Students line up at the front of the room.
4. As soon as everyone is quiet we will leave for lunch.
5. We need to be quiet in the hall.
6. I will give strikes for loud talking, horseplay and bumping into walls and lockers.
If the class get's three strikes, the class will receive assigned seats in the
cafeteria.
7. When you get to the cafeteria, enter quietly and go to the assigned
line. Do
Push your chair in as you leave the classroom.
Do Go to your locker and line up at the corner of our hallway.
Do Line up quietly behind the locker people if you are a girl on "A" day
or if you are a boy on "B" day.
Do stay in line behind the people in front of you.
Do Follow the "Walking in the Halls" procedure to get to lunch quickly.
You have one day for every day that you are
absent to make up a quiz or test. You are responsible for coming to me to get the make up quiz or
test during Zone. I will remind you during science class that you need to
come to science class during Zone to make it up. Remember, make up quizzes
and tests are harder than taking them on time with the class. Statistics
show that students do better taking quizzes and tests on time with the rest of
the class.
Do Study for your quiz or test.
Do Come to me during RTT to take your quiz or test.
Don't wait until progress reports come out to take a quiz or test.
It almost always results in a bad grade.
Why is raising your hand important? I need to hear what each student
has to say. If everyone is talking at once, I will only hear the loudest
people. Second, you need to hear what each student has to say. And,
finally, teachers have this thing called "wait time". Wait time gives all
students a chance to think of an answer. If students are blurting out, this robs the rest of the class of the chance to think of their own
answer. Most of the time, I want students to raise their hands to answer
or respond in class. Here's the procedure.
DO Raise your hand to answer a question.
DO Wait to be called on.
Don't Blurt out answers. Don't
Wave your arm around or shout Mrs. Lovdahl.
Is it ever OK to blurt out answers? When we're having a
brainstorming session it's OK to blurt out ideas. Ideas should be said one
at a time and in a normal tone of voice (no yelling please!). This is how
I'll let you know when it's OK to blurt out ideas.
When it's OK to blurt out
ideas, I will say "Let's brainstorm some ideas. What do you think
about....."
I will hold both of my hands
out to the class to invite you to tell me your ideas.
When brainstorming is over, I
will raise my hand to let you know that you should go back to raising your
hand to answer.
Science Notebook Procedure
JFMS science students need a composition notebook for their Science
Notebook. This composition book must be dedicated to science class and cannot be
used for other classes. Do Purchase a composition notebook.
Do Reserve 3 pages in the front for a Table of Contents.
Do Keep all science papers in order according to the Table of Contents.
Do Check the Table of Contents on the bulletin board for a list of notes, papers
and foldables that
should be in your Science Notebook.
Do Put a complete heading on each page in your Science Notebook. A
complete heading includes the title, page number and date.
Do Turn your Science Notebook in for a grade when instructed. Don't
use your Science Notebook for other classes.
When I need the class's attention I will raise
my hand and say CLASS CLASS. Do Respond by saying YES YES.
Do Turn your chair to face me.
Don't yell or tell other students to stop talking.
Starting Class Procedure
Let me tell you a story.... When I come to work, I don't wait for my
boss to tell me to start working. If it's 7:45 am, I know I'm supposed to
be working. When you go home after school, you don't wait for someone to
tell you to start relaxing. If you're home (and your homework is done),
it's time to relax! Right? If it's class time, you're supposed to be
learning - don't wait for someone (me) to come tell you to get started!
Time = 0 - 3 minutes: Do
Sharpen your pencils
Do Write the Class work and Homework
assignments in your agenda.
Do Read the instructions on the projector, overhead or TV and follow the
directions.
Do Open your Science Notebook
Do Start the Warm up in your Science
Notebook.
If you finish early, Do
reflect on your science notes.
Don't wander all over the classroom "picking" or being disruptive.
Don't wait until I come in to get started.
Don't wait to sharpen your pencils during class.
We need to be quiet in the halls when classes are in session to avoid
disrupting the learning of other students at The Fork. We need to walk
calmly to avoid hurting ourselves or others.
Do Walk quietly.
Do Keep to the right side of the hallway.
Do Walk in single file.
Do Keep your hands to yourself.
Do Walk quickly.
After writing in your agenda, begin working on the Warm Up. Warm Ups
are part of your class work.
Do Write all your Warm Ups in your Science Notebook.
Do Write the title of the Warm Up at the top of the page.
Do Write all of the information including the complete
question, information or data.
Do Answer the question using good grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Do Write neatly. Messy, incomplete work must be redone for
homework.
