According to Dr. Robert Marzano, direct instruction in
content specific vocabulary significantly improves student
achievement. According to research compiled in Classroom
Instruction that Works, 2001 "an analysis of the research
provides a strong case for systematic instruction in vocabulary at
virtually every grade level." To be effective, vocabulary
instruction should allow students to:
- encounter words in context, more than once;

- receive specific instruction in the new words;
- associate an image with the word
- focus on words critical to new content produces the most powerful
learning
